WHAT ARE
IMPLANTS?
An implant is a small titanium screw placed into the jawbone during a short surgery to create an artificial tooth root in your mouth. Over time, the bone grows tightly around the implant, creating a very stable foundation used to support a denture and greatly improve denture retention.
WHY SHOULD I GET IMPLANTS?
Implant-retained dentures are the best option for most people who experience the following:
-
Loose lower denture
-
Continued soreness after numerous adjustments
-
Would like to regain sensation of feeling the palate
CAN I AFFORD
IMPLANTS?
As dental implant therapy becomes more common, there are many options for those who are interested in this treatment.
We can refer you to practitioners with various financial and treatment options to have implants surgically placed.

HOW DENTURES ATTACH TO IMPLANTS
To connect a denture to an implant, we use a part called an abutment.
This is a small connector that screws into the implant and allows for connection to a prosthetic.
There are two main types of implant-supported dentures:

Removable Overdenture
These dentures "snap" onto attachments that look like small buttons or hitches. This keeps the denture secure while you eat but allows you to remove it for cleaning.

Fixed Dentures
These are not removable. They are screwed onto multi-unit abutments, which create a level platform for the teeth. This option is more like a permanent dental bridge and provides a very natural feel.
When a dental implant is used to help keep a denture in place, but still rests directly on the gums and is easily removable by the patient, it is called an “overdenture”.

Typically, the fewest implants required for implant dentures is 4 implants for a complete upper denture or 2 implants for a complete lower denture, but the number of dental implants you want could be more.
The reason the top denture requires more implants is because the bone that the implants rest in is softer in the upper jaw than the lower jaw. In addition, in order to remove the nuisance of plastic covering the roof your mouth in a complete denture, 4 implants are required. The number of implants required to assist a partial denture depends on your specific situation and wants.
